Final Thought

The final review was a bust on my side of the panel however much of what was said by the panel was very insightful and complementary of my process and ambitions with the project. However my execution seemed to lack some conviction especially in the move to go underground, which was poorly rendered in the final drawings. I believe that my final drawings lacked the beauty and the beauty of the emotion from earlier in the semester. The reinforced the truth that presentational clarity is most necessary in selling a proposal and this is something I have seemed to struggle with in all final reviews. I need to tie up my ideas sooner and clearer, trust my intuition and continue to take risk and avoid be inhibited by failure. I believe that this semester I have learned a lot about not only myself as an (future) architect but as a person. I learned of the ability to take a risk and not be demoralized by failure, trust in my intelligence when making decisions and create only beautiful objects (nothing half ass) all things I have struggled with in the past. This semester, solidified by the direction of my advisor, ACT, my trusted professor, Luis Carranza and a most inspiring lecture by SHoP architect, Gregg Pasquarrelli, encouraged me to believe in my self my Field and to not be afraid to take a risk.

Architecture on a certain level is a bunch of bull shit. The politics, the limitations of "Styles", the lack of conviction, the restrictions put on design from contractors, lenders etc has diluted the Field. However DESIGN is not. Design is the most realest thing to me. The process in making beautiful things gets me off. Design beautiful obejects through the process of taking risks.

Professional Presentations from MoMA

Bernard Tschumi's Park Villette
(top) final drawings of the series of form on the site
(middle) same seires in model form
(bottom) early skecthes of form

Zaha's competeion work for the Park Villete (which she lost) the panel second row third from top is a set of thin transparent layers that demostrate the development of single forms

Eisenman Model (Luis help= not sure of project name)
(Luis help) not sure of project or author but the peice is simple beautifully done
None of these images give true justice to any of the works from the MoMA architecture room but hope these may spark some ideals as per our final presentations.

Lookign at What I Have Created

Early study model of section of building (clip board)
Model used to develop form and massing of site above building (wax)

Models used in "Drawing Without Paper" exercise
Mapping exercise expressing the "strong or influential" planes within the campus

Mapping of the "weaving" of campus physically and intellectually

"Discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes."- Marcel Proust
"... a library is a magical cabinet where many spellbound spirits rest. They awake when we call them; when we do not open a book, this book, literally, geometrically, is a volume an object among objects. When we open it, when a book finds its reader, an aesthetic act takes place. And, for the reader, the same book changes we should point out, since we change... and its possible to state that with every reading, every rereading, recollection of that reading, the text is renewed." Emerson
After looking through the work that I have already done these images atop the page will aide me in finalizing my formal, conceptual and spatial aspects of the Library design. The relationships and strategies used in creating these piece will be re looked at and used to strengthen registrations lines, massing strategies and formal relationships between the spaces already developed. The planar mapping exercise will be used to develop stronger registrations within the spaces, the weaving and wax studies will be sued to develop strong formal massing of these "planes" while the early study model will be used to strengthen already existing spatial relationships.
Images to follow.

Process Shots

Images taken during the production process of hybrid casting of floor plan "Drawing Without Paper"

This process has been quite successful in that I have looked at the way I have been articulating the spaces in a totally different way. Before this exercise I mainly been reading the dialogue between spaces and the OMNI POWERFUL stacks. Now I am reading the relationships between the reading rooms, conference room, cafe digital catalogues etc much more clearly. After this the articulations of the spaces and their legitimacy in terms of the manipulations tweakage and placement are much stronger. The process of Drawing without Paper has been an invaluable step in the design of the library.
Final images to come soon.

PROGRESS ON DARWING WITHOUT PAPER

"plan"attempt 1: wax cast using pink foam as form work

Side Tracked at the MoMA, Manhattan

"Drawings Without Paper"---This weekend I went to Manhattan to relax and escape before the grind of the final weeks of design. However there is no escaping beauty. At the MoMA I found hidden within the exhibits "Drawings withOUT Paper". These works were beautiful. None of the works were meant to be drawings without paper but they did achieve many of the same aesthetic qualities that the current exercise if attempting.
